Exo Msg 51

1. The ten commandments speak of God's image and likeness.
2. The kind of law a person makes expresses the kind of person that one is.
3. The first function of the law is not to expose but to reveal God to us.
4. 10 words (Exo 34:28) = 10 commands (Deut 4:13).
5. Jehovah thy God is used in the first 5 commandments.
6. The first 4 are related to God, the last 6 related to man.
7. Honoring of parents is ranked with the first four commands, related to God Himself.
8. When we honor our parents, we honor our source, which is God Himself.
9. God is jealous; He would not tolerate idols.
10. God is holy; keeping the Sabbath is related to God's holiness, to His being separate from all things.
11. God is loving; if we honor our parents, it shows we love them. If we love others, we shall not steal from them.
12. God is righteous because He will those who hate Him for three or four generations.
13. God is truthful. Those who tell lies are in darkness, but those who speak the truth are in light.
14. Because He is God, He cannot lie. Because light is the source of truth.
15. God is pure. The first and last commandments expose the idolatry and covetousness within us. In Col 3:5, covetousness is idolatry.
16. The fact that we are covetous indicates that we are not pure.
17. The two tablets are two tablets of testimony. This indicates that the law is God's testimony.
18. The law is a type, a figure, of Christ who speaks God, describes God, and expresses God.
19. As the law is the ten words of God which reveal God to His people, so Christ is the Word of God revealing God to us.
